Tucked away on a side street in Emmaus, PA is one very dedicated brewer: Kyle Funk, who’s hard at work putting out his award-winning IPAs, lagers and other assorted varieties of craft beer via the Funk Brewing Company. Funk has been brewing in his Sixth Street building since February 2014, though his title of brewer began over 12 years ago. Their latest seasonal release is an Imperial IPA named “Doubled Citra IPA.”
The beer pours a clear golden yellow color tending towards orange. The thin white head shows great retention. While the head remains for quite some time it does eventually dissipate, leaving behind a nice cap of lacing.
On the nose you will find a variety of hop aromas. Notes of grapefruit, lemongrass and orange zest pave the way. Tropical and stone fruit notes follow on the heels of the citrus. A hint of sweet malts can also be detected.
On the palate you will find the same wave of citrus. Grapefruit pith and juice, lemongrass and orange juice and zest all flood the mouth. Notes of melon and tropical fruits hit around the mid-palate along with a touch pine. All the hops are balanced by a crisp malt backbone. The finish is clean.
A great Imperial IPA from Funk Brewing. While it lives up the expectation of the style it isn’t over the top. This surprisingly drinkable brew would make a great pair for Vintage cheddar, salmon with mango salsa or a lemon tart.
