SweetWater Brewing Company is a craft brewery founded in 1997 by Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerny in Atlanta, Georgia. The brewery’s portfolio includes over a dozen year round and limited release brews. Available May through August is a “catch and release” beer by the name of “Goin’ Coastal.” This summer treat is an IPA brewed with pineapple.
The beer pours a slightly cloudy light amber color with orange highlights. The thin off white head shows average retention. Once dissipated an ample lacing is left behind both atop the beer and along the sides of the glass itself.
Aromas of sweet pineapple are noticeable from first sniff. Strong hop notes of grapefruit, lemon and pine resin follow the pineapple and create a balance to the initial sweetness. Rounding out the bouquet is a cereal like grainy note.
The palate is akin to the nose. You’ll notice strong hop flavors of citrus fruits including grapefruit and lemon. There are piney and grassy hop notes as well. A light malty note appears around the midpalate and aids in balancing the hops. The pineapple pops up on the finish but is very mild.
A balanced and solid IPA, even though the pineapple seems to get a little lost amidst the hops, it is still a great beer. Try pairing this one with extra sharp cheddar, pineapple five spice chicken or citrus pound cake.
