In operation since late 2002, Southern Tier Brewing Company of Lakewood, New York is a fan favorite for craft beer lovers. Boasting an impressive portfolio of year round and seasonal brews, owners Phin and Sara DeMink keep expanding and pushing the boundaries of their vision. One of their newest seasonal beers is the 2X IBA, a double India Style Black Ale.
The beer pours a dark brown that appears almost black in the glass. There are ruby hues when viewed directly against the light. The two finger dense tan colored head shows moderate retention. Once the head dissipates a light lacing remains.
Hop aromas of pine and tropical fruits meld into aromas of citrus, floral and earthy hop notes. Coming though on the heels of the hops are notes of rich roasted malts, chocolate, caramel and sweet dried fruits.
The palate offers sweet notes of caramel and deep roasted malts. Rich chocolate notes and a hint of smoke accent the malts. Bitter hop notes of citrus, pine and tropical fruits carry through to the finish and balance the malts. The sweetness seems to become more prominent as the beer warms. The mouthfeel is smooth and almost creamy.
