Weyerbacher is turning 20 this year…and how do your celebrate 20 years of bold and innovative beers? With the release of their 20th Anniversary ale! A Belgian-Style Dark Ale weighing in at a whopping 11% ABV.
The beer pours a rich brown color with copper hues. The one and a half finger soapy cappuccino colored head shows great retention. Once the head dissipates a generous lacing remains both on the sides of the glass and atop the beer.
Rich aromas of candied sugar and toffee leap from the glass. Notes of dried dark fruits like raisins, figs and dates mix beautifully with notes of cherries and vanilla. A bready malt note is also discernible. Yeasty, earthy and herbal notes round out the bouquet.
On the palate rich fruit notes including dates, figs, raisins and cherries hit right off the bat. Sweet flavors of brown sugar, toffee and caramel intertwine with rich bready malts. The 11% ABV is noticeable at this point. Notes of vanilla combine with spice notes of bright coriander and rich anise. An earthy/yeasty note carries through to the finish.
No doubt this is a great way to celebrate 20 years! Complex and balanced, it would definitely benefit from a little bottle aging. Try paring it with Camembert, bacon wrapped dates or chocolate lava cake.
