Founded in 1989, Boulevard Brewing Company has become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest. They produce fresh, flavorful beers using the finest traditional ingredients and the best of both old and new brewing techniques. The Calling IPA is one of their everyday offerings that showcases the quality ingredients and techniques used by Boulevard.
The beer pours a slightly hazy golden orange color with a generous two finger soapy white head that shows pretty good retention. After it slowly dissipates, a beautiful light lacing remains both atop the beer and along the sides of the glass.
On the nose you’ll pick up lots of fruit notes. Citrus notes of orange blossoms, lemon zest, and grapefruit hit right off the bat and are followed up with juicy tropical aromas of mango and passion fruit. Amidst all the fruit notes are piney, earthy, grassy and floral hop notes. Biscuit malts round out the bouquet.
The palate echoes the nose pretty well. Notes of refreshing citrus fruits including orange blossoms, lemon zest and grapefruit intertwine seamlessly with the sweet tropical fruit notes dominated by mango. Piney hop notes are in no short supply and a touch of grassy and floral hops are also detectable. All of these hop notes are balanced by a backbone of biscuit malts.
This fruit forward, smooth and well balanced IPA is complex and dry, but not bitter. The alcohol is extremely well hidden. A great beer from Boulevard. Try it with Jarlsberg, grilled Mahi Mahi or an apricot torte with hazelnut crust.
