Located in Frederick, Maryland, Flying Dog has been brewing well received craft beers since 1990. The brewery boasts an extensive portfolio of over 2 dozen beers and one of their most recent releases is an IPA brewed with blood oranges, appropriately named Bloodline.
The beer pours a clear orange tinged amber color. The one finger soapy off white head dissipates at a steady rate. Once the head has receded a decent lacing remains both atop the beer and along the sides of the glass.
Aromas of pine and grapefruit dominate the nose. Bright aromas of lemon and orange soften the pine notes and create an inviting bouquet.
The palate shows a plethora of hops dominated by grapefruit pith. Piney hop notes dance across the palate on the heels of the grapefruit. Lemon notes show up next with the introduction of the blood orange. The orange mellows the hops while melding perfectly with all the citrus notes they offer up. A touch of pale malts can be detected through the citrus. The orange notes linger through the finish.
A bright and refreshing beer that begs for warmer weather to be enjoyed in. Well balanced and impeccably crafted. Careful drinking this dog though – it bites back with a 7% ABV that is extremely well hidden! Try this one with aged gouda, orange chicken or a blood orange tart.
