Rogue is an American craft brewery founded in Ashland, Oregon. By 1989 the company opened their second brewpub in Newport, where they are now headquartered. Today, they operate brewpubs in Oregon, Washington, and California and export their beer throughout the US and internationally. Rogue Ales have been described as “invariably fun and full flavored.” The proof of this statement can be confirmed with just one sip of their Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout.
The beer pours an impressive black color with copper hues when viewed in the light. The two finger frothy light brown head dissipates rapidly but leaves behind a beautiful swirly, dense lacing atop the beer.
Aromas of creamy milk chocolate, as well as rich unsweetened chocolate hit first. Roasted coffee notes come next and help to lift the chocolate aromas. Fruit notes of dried cherries are notable under the chocolate and coffee aromas. Dark toasted malt and grain notes bring up the rear of the bouquet and pack a real punch!
On the palate, roasted malt and grain notes meld perfectly with a touch of roasted nuts. Rich coffee flavors with a faint taste of dried cherries sweep over the tongue and give way to a piney hop bitterness on the mid-palate. The finish reintroduces the roasty flavors highlighted by notes of oats and a variety of chocolates.
The Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout is the perfect fireplace sipper or gift for the beer lover in your life. Trying pairing this one with blue cheese, espresso crusted brisket or mocha fudge brownies ala mode.
