Southern Tier 2XMAS Ale

Southern Tier 2XMASIn operation since late 2002, Southern Tier Brewing Company of Lakewood, New York is a fan favorite for craft beer lovers. Boasting an impressive portfolio of year round and seasonal brews, owners Phin and Sara DeMink keep expanding and pushing the boundaries of their vision.

Southern Tier’s eclectic craft beers tend to score the highest rating from RateBeer and Beer Advocate. Their winter seasonal 2XMAS Ale scored a huge 93 overall from RateBeer, and a 97 for the style. We agree, and think the Southern Tier 2XMAS Ale is one of the best holiday craft beers of the season.

The 2XMAS Ale is a double spiced ale brewed in the tradition of Swedish Glögg. While Glögg is a hot, spiced wine, Southern Tier liberally borrowed the flavor profile of the authentic Swedish drink to add figs, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves into a craft beer that is just perfect for cold winter evenings.

The beer pours a dark amber in the glass with light carbonation. Aromas of spice cake, dried fruit, and mulled wine are present and very alluring. The medium bodied palate shows a lot of spices balanced with sweet malt, and slight hop bitterness. Cloves seem to be the strongest flavor on the palate, whereas the cinnamon dominates the aromas.

Not as heavy as their Pumpkin or other fall releases, this is a delightful craft beer that can be easily shared with family and friends. Pop a bottle at the end of your holiday meal with some cookies and cake, and spread the holiday cheer. 4.5 out of 5 Pints
