Saranac Legacy IPA

Saranac Legacy IPASaranac is celebrating their 125th Anniversary! The Matt Brewing Company was founded in late 1880s by German-born immigrant Francis Xavier Matt. Today, under the leadership of the third and fourth generations of the Matt family, the brewery still crafts beer to the exacting standards set forth by Francis Xavier. In order to mark their 125 years of brewing, Saranac created Legacy IPA which blends old school and new school hops.

The beer pours a golden straw yellow with visible fine sediment. The billowy white two finger head dissipates rather quickly but leaves a light ring of lacing around the glass. The carbonation is notable with a large amount of bubbles rising to the top of the glass.

Hop aromas dominate the nose. You’ll find citrus notes of grapefruit and pineapple, as well as notes of pine needles and grass. There is a hint of caramel malts and brown sugar that help to lift the hops as well as add balance by providing a hint of sweetness to the bouquet.

On the palate the hop flavors dominate without being overly bitter. Flavors of grapefruit pith, orange and lemon zest hit first. Notes of pine resin and fresh hay follow. There is a caramel malt backbone that that is detectable through all the hops. While the beer is dry and bitter there is an underlying sweetness that helps to add balance. A lighter body combined with this balance makes this IPA an easy drinker.

Cheers to Saranac! This is a great beer to help celebrate their Legacy! It is balanced, smooth and extremely drinkable. Try pairing this one with Havarti, a classic beef burger or lemon cheesecake. 3 out of 5 Pints
