Mankato Haymaker IPA

Mankato Haymaker IPAMankato Brewery started producing beers in 2012, and is proud to revive the brewing tradition in the Key City. Mankato is the first production brewery in the community since 1967, and they focus on creating authentic beers that reflect the heritage of the region and its people.

The beer pours a honey colored amber that is appears slightly hazy in the glass. The two finger khaki color dissipates at a slow yet steady rate. Once the head recedes, you’ll notice a layer of sticky lacing.

The nose offers up a plethora of hop aromas. Pine and resin hop notes are lifted by notes of citrus and both earthy and grassy hops. weet smells of caramel malts help to balance the bouquet and a hint of pepper spice hides in the background.

On the palate the caramel malt backbone is notable and provides a solid base for the building of the hop flavors that follow. Citrus hop notes of mainly grapefruit pith and flesh along with notes of piney resin strike like lightening. A light pepper spice pops up in the transition from the first wave of hops to the second wave. Earthy and grassy hop notes are hit the palate next. The malt and all the hop notes meld and carry through to the lingering, slightly bitter finish.

Mankota’s Haymaker IPA is a solid IPA. Hop dominated but well balanced with the malt backdrop. Minnesota craft brewers are proving to be a hidden treasure! Try pairing this one with Stilton, a classic cheeseburger or a grapefruit torte. 3 out of 5 Pints
