By producing Lancaster Pennsylvania’s first commercially brewed beer in nearly 40 years, the Lancaster Brewing Company has awakened a rich and colorful brewing history. The company has a commitment to quality brewing and operates under Reinheitsgebot, which is a historic German law mandating that only malt, hops, yeast, and water be used for the preparation of beer. Lancaster Kolsch is an authentic German style ale that is available during the warmer months (May-September).
The beer pours a light straw color with golden hues. The off white colored head dissipates rather quickly and leaves no lacing to speak of behind. The carbonation of the beer is notable with a constant stream of little bubbles rising towards the top of the glass.
Hop aromas leap from the glass and range from floral to grassy to earthy and citrus. Rich and slightly sweet grainy and biscuity malt aromas balance the hops and add a certain crispness to the bouquet.
The palate echoes the bouquet and shows great hop character including the same floral, grassy, earthy and citrus notes. The citrus profile that is most dominate is lemon zest but a touch of grapefruit is undeniable. A sweet biscuit flavor with a touch of grain and yeast balance and mute the hop notes. A hint of spice is also detectable underlying the malts and hops.
