Rogue Ales is an American craft brewery founded in 1988 in Ashland, Oregon. The following year the company opened their second brewpub in Newport, Oregon where they are now headquartered. They operate brewpubs in Oregon, Washington, and California and currently distribute throughout the US and internationally. Their beers have been described as “invariably fun and full flavored,” and their Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel Raspberry & Chocolate Ale was recently released, the third in the Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel series.
The beer pours a clear deep, dark mahogany color. The dense one and a half finger toffee colored head dissipates at a moderate rate and leaves behind a light, sporadic lacing that adheres mostly to the sides of the glass.
Aromas of sweet raspberry like raspberry jelly leap from the glass. Creamy notes of milk chocolate and rich cocoa ride on the curtails of the raspberry. There is a bready doughy note that is definitely reminiscent of pretzels. A roasted coffee note is intertwined with the raspberry, chocolate and pretzel aromas.
On the palate a sweet chocolate doughy note hits first and conjures images of chocolate glazed doughnuts. The creamy milk chocolate and rich Dutch cocoa like notes from the bouquet are also notable. A subtle and sweet raspberry note is discernible through all the chocolate and lingers through to the finish. There is a bitter note that hits at the mid-palate and is elevated by deep roasty malt and light coffee notes. There is a very faint pretzel taste that hits towards the finish. This lighter bodied beer showcases a noteworthy creamy mouthfeel.
