Boaks Brewery of Pompton Lakes, NJ has a simple and straightforward mission…to brew beer that Brian Boak likes. All of their recipes stem from Brian’s days of homebrewing, brewed to taste not strict specifications. Strict specifications win Gold Medals; brewing great tasting beers win fans. Most of the brews are British or Belgian style like their Two Blind Monks, a Belgian Style Dubbel.
The beer pours a clear copper-amber color with reddish hues. The one finger off white head dissipates quickly and leaves behind a light lacing. The beer shows decent carbonation with a moderate amount of bubbles rising in the glass.
Aromas of dark dried fruits like raisins capture the senses. Notes of dark cherries and sweet aromas of caramel and molasses follow shortly. Rich roasted malt notes with a touch of banana hit next and are met with spice aromas dominated by clove. There is mild yeasty aroma the peeks through the rich malt character.
The palate echoes the nose fairly closely but with a slightly amped sweetness. Notes of black cherry and sweet raisins are followed by rich malt notes. Sweet caramel flavors dance across the palate and are backed by the strong malt presence. Yeasty bready and spice notes are also detectable along with a hint of banana.
Boaks Two Blind Monks is a pretty darn good interpretation of a Belgian Dubbel. Brian Boak has a the right idea by brewing in order to win fans, and he is certain to win a bunch with this brew. A great pair for Brie, slow roasted duck with cherry compote or banana raisin cake.
