Since its founding in 1995, Weyerbacher Brewing Company of Easton Pennsylvania has become known for outstanding barrel aged beers. In addition to these high gravity brews, Weyerbacher also has several session beers in their portfolio. One of these is their Last Chance IPA, a west coast style IPA made with Centennial, Cascade, Simcoe and Columbus hops. Weyerbacher donates a portion of the proceeds from the sales of Last Chance IPA to small, regional animal rescue operations. These shelters offer dogs, cats and other pets their “last chance” to find a new forever home. For every case sold at Bottle King, Eleventh Hour Rescue will receive a donation.
The beer pours a clear golden color with orange hues. The two finger soapy white head shows a modest amount of retention. Once the head dissipates a light frothy lacing is left behind both atop the beer and along the sides of the glass.
On the nose a plethora of hop notes shine through. First sweet citrus notes of pineapple and tangerine intertwine tropical notes of mango. Bitter citrus notes dominated by grapefruit and lemon hit next. Floral hop aromas transition to grassy and herbal hop notes. Resiny pine notes round out the hop profile. A crisp clean malt presence is also detectable.
The palate echoes the nose rather seamlessly. First sweet citrus and tropical notes quickly slide across the palate and become floral and herbal in nature. Grapefruit and lemon notes enter on the midpalate and remain for brief stay before giving was to piney resin notes. The finish is slightly bitter and ligers with notes of pine and grapefruit pith. A slight crisp and clean malt note is present in the background offering balance and drinkability.
