Brooklyn Wild Streak

Brooklyn Wild StreakFounded in 1988, Brooklyn Brewery has brewed flavorful beers that enrich the life, tradition and culture of the communities it serves. Its award-winning roster of year-round, seasonal and specialty beers have gained the Brewery notoriety as one of the top craft beer producers in the world. The brewery has recently added a new collection of beers coined the Brooklyn Quarterly Experiment, or BQE. The BQE offers you bottle-conditioned beers that take an extra measure of time, space and dedication to pull off. The current BQE release is “Wild Streak,” a Belgian inspired golden ale aged in bourbon barrels and bottle fermented using the wild yeast strain Brettanomyces as well as Champagne yeast.

The beer pours a rich golden color with orange highlights. The billowing eggshell colored head has amazing retention. Once the head finally dissipates it leaves behind a beautiful and generous lacing atop the beer. The carbonation is notable with the consistent rising of tiny champagne like bubbles. The viscosity is also evident by the way the beer clings to the sides of the glass (this one has legs)!

On the nose subtle orchard fruit notes of tart apples and juicy pears hit first. Muted citrus notes of lemon and tangerine follow on the heels of the orchard fruits and give way to a light wave to stone fruits including peaches and apricots. The yeast is noticeable and offers notes of bread, funk and spice. A faint note of vanilla oak from the barrel aging is also discernible.

On the palate fruity notes of tart apple, pear and dried apricots hit first. There is a sweet note of honey that lifts the fruits before the profile shifts to earthy and spicy. Malt flavors linger underneath the notes of earth and pepper. The yeast offers a vinous note as well as those of barnyard and musk, adding both elegance and complexity to the beer. The finish is slightly boozy with flavors of vanilla and oak imparted from the aging. There is a lot going on in this beer.

Brooklyn Wild Steak is very complex yet perfectly balanced! Garrett Oliver concocted a real winner here! Try pairing this one with a washed rind cheese, venison steaks or peach cobbler. 4.5 out of 5 Pints
