Magic Hat Pistil

Magic Hat Pistil The Magic Hat Brewing Company was founded by Alan Newman and Bob Johnson in 1994 in Burlington, Vermont. Since their inception, Magic Hat has continued to grow in both popularity and size. Today, they are one of the most recognized craft breweries on the east coast, and the Pistil is their spring seasonal which is brewed with dandelions.

The beer pours a slightly hazy golden straw color. The head is bright white and somewhat thin. It displays a fair amount of staying power but once it does begin to dissipate a beautiful lacing remains. The beer actually looks like spring!

Bright aromas of citrus fruits, namely grapefruit and lemon, tantalize your olfactory senses. Both sweet and hopped floral notes share the stage with the citrus. There is also a slight malty/bready note that balances the brightness of the citrus and the earthiness of the floral notes.

On the palate this light to medium bodied beer echoes the bouquet. There is a strong hop presence somewhat similar to an IPA. The first wave brings notes of pleasantly bittered grapefruit. Wave two crashes with a slightly spicy white pepper note and a crisp undefined floral note that also displays a slight bitterness. The third wave carries with it a bitter bomb defined by an earthy almost grassy note that is most definitely reminiscent of a dandelion leaf. There is a smooth and crisp malt backbone that survives all the waves and aids in balancing the bitterness.

Pistil is undeniably a refreshing spring beer. Kudos to Magic Hat for providing a description that is dead on. Rarely do we see this! A great pair for spicy dishes, sushi and of course warm weather. 3 out of 5 Pints
