Part of the Evil Genius Eyeclops Variety 6 pack is the Blind Eye PA, a Belgian Style IPA. The unfiltered beer pours a light copper/orange color similar to that of a dried apricot. The head is very thin and cream in color.
The fresh nose is dominated by hops, highlighted by tropical fruit aromas. The hops transition from piney to citrusy, and the citrus notes are akin to the zest of a pink grapefruit. The tropical aromas, mainly mango, add a discernible sweetness to the bouquet.
The first sip carries a spicy mouthfeel. It’s not an actual spice note, but a sensation on the tongue, similar to the feeling of eating fresh course ground black pepper. Surprisingly, it is a pleasant sensation and adds a complexity to the beer’s profile. The flavors that rush through the palate is opened up by the mock spice, bready malt and yeast notes. The mid palate floods the mouth with notes of grapefruit and lemon, washing away most of the bready notes. The long finish is bitter with a resonating note of fresh mowed grass.
Blind Eye PA is a hoppy beer indeed! This is not yesterday’s IPA, but a great example of the new generation of IPAs. A must try for any Hop-Head, or for someone looking for something a little different!
