Elysian Valhalla Red IPA

Elysian Valhalla Red IPA Founded in 1995, the Elysian Brewery has expanded twice and now owns three brewpubs within Seattle. This well known label offers seven year round brews and at least nine seasonal and specialty offerings throughout the year.

Valhalla Red IPA is part of Elysian’s Manic IPA series. The beer pours a copper color with reflective orange hues. The color remains consistent throughout the pour. The medium head is fluffy, creamy white in color, and shows some staying power.

On the nose sweet caramel malts, bread and hops are evident. The hop notes definitely dominate and are extremely diverse. The first detectable hop is a piney resin note. From there you start to pick up on citrus and floral notes, with a distinctive orange blossom aroma.

The mouthfeel of this medium-bodied, moderately carbonated brew is rich and smooth. On the palate you are immediately immersed in hop heaven. Flavors of citrus, pine and sweet spring blossoms highjack the palate. All these flavors together are somewhat reminiscent of a spiced, candied orange. The mid-palate greets the bitterish hops with juicy mango, sweet caramel malts and biscuit flavors. The slightly bitter finish displays a second wallop of hops re-energizing all the original flavors.

Elysian Valhalla Red IPA is a well balanced and easy drinking hopped up brew. This is not an over-the-top IPA, but still a must try for any Hop-Head out there. A great effort from Elysian, this beer will make you re-think the profile of an IPA. 3.5 Out of 5 Pints
