IPA stands for India Pale Ale, a term which was created centuries ago when beer was transported from England to India, which at the time was under English control. In order to have the English beer reach India, brewers had to use an excessive amount of hops as a preservative so the beer would last the journey.
Many IPA’s boast about how many “IBU’s” they have. IBU stand for international bitter units, or how bitter the beer is due to hops. Many hop heads vie for the biggest IBU number…you know who you are. Finding an IPA that showcases the floral aspects of the hops is a rarity but Left Hand Brewery made the 400 Pound Monkey!
When poured into the glass, the beer has a nice amber color making it similar to most other IPA’s. There will be some bitter components to it, that’s just how IPA’s are, but you get a floral sensation as you’re drinking it which makes it stand out from all of the others. When you take a sip and exhale, you can even smell that hops are a flower.
What’s great about this beer is that it’s not one sided, as to malty or hoppy. It’s as well rounded an IPA as one could find. Instead of blasting your palate with hops, the 400 Pound Monkey lets you wanting more.
