Southern Tier Crème Brulee Stout

Southern Tier Crème BruleeSouthern Tier has been concocting amazing brews since 2002 in Lakewood, New York. They boast an eclectic portfolio of craft beers that tend to score the highest rating from RateBeer and Beer Advocate. Crème Brulee Stout is a seasonal offering from their impressive Blackwater Series that has earned a 98 point rating from Rate Beer. Beer for Dessert? Don’t mind if I do!

The beer pours almost black in color with dark amber hues. The head is thin and dissipates immediately. It is not your typically creamy white, but rather light brown in color. It pours thick, showcasing its full body. The first thing you notice is the viscosity of the beer in the glass.

On the first whiff you are overwhelmed by notes of caramel. Taking a second to let the caramel clear, you’ll then notice background notes of vanilla and creamy malt. Putting it all together, the nose carries the smell of, well, Crème Brulee!

On the palate you will notice a higher level of carbonation then the head would yield you to believe you would notice. Still, it is not a highly carbonated beer. The mouthfeel is thick, rich and silky. Initially, flavors of caramel, vanilla, and sweet cream dance across the palate. These sweet and luscious flavors combine with a marzipan note on the mid palate. The long finish is slightly bitter with hop notes balanced by the lighter sweetness of coffee liqueur. The sweetness on the palate changing to a slightly bitter finish is the perfect testament to the beer’s balance and complexity.

The beer really does taste like Crème Brulee (with a cup of espresso washing it down)! A great offering from Southern Tier that shouldn’t be missed!4 out of 5 Pints
